8 Tips to Prevent Performance Eyewear Damage

This entry was posted on May 5, 2016.

Your glasses aren't like the other things you wear. If your favorite shirt gets torn or you break a shoelace, it's disappointing.  If something happens and you damage your eyeglasses, it can be costly and inconvenient.

You did a lot of work and a lot of waiting to get the pair that was right for you. Here are a few tips to prevent damage to your performance eyewear.

Rinse them

Before you clean or wipe your prescription lenses or sunglasses, be sure to rinse them off with water. Your lenses collect tiny dust and dirt particles. Wiping those particles against the dry lens can cause scratches.

Wash them often

Wash your glasses at least once a day. The cleaner they are, the better you'll see out of them. Your lenses also tend to stay in better shape for longer when they are cleaned properly and regularly.

Be careful when spraying

Not every spray cleaner is meant for your glasses. Household cleaners such as Windex contain ammonia, which can destroy the coating on the lens. Before you spray, make sure the cleaner you're using is made to clean specifically clean eyeglasses.

Air dry

Another good way to keep unwanted materials from your lenses is to allow them to air dry. If that's not an option, wipe them down with a soft, clean and lint-free cloth. Liberty Sport offers several varieties of lens cleaning cloths.

Be sure to use the right cloth

No matter how soft a paper towel, tissue or napkin might feel, keep them away from your lenses. These materials all have textured surfaces that can scratch your lenses.

And try to avoid using the tail of your shirt to wipe your glasses. Unless you're wearing something that's 100 percent cotton, the fibers in the fabric will scratch or transfer dirt to your lenses.

Get a grip

Hold your glasses by getting a firm grip on the section that goes over the bridge of your nose. This will keep you from accidentally bending your frames. Your glasses will feel better, and you'll see better too.

Store them properly

When you're not wearing your glasses, store them in a case to keep them from getting bent, broken, scratched or dirty.

You can always choose a thinner case or a microfiber pouch if you don't want anything too bulky. At the very least, if you place your glasses down at the end of the night, don't put them with the lenses down. This will only invite scratches. Check out Liberty Sport protective eyeglass cases.

The eight tips above will help you see better, avoid damaging your eyeglasses and also significantly extend the life of your eyeglasses.
